In the last 12 years, obesity has increased 44% in Turkey. That is a problem considering that the leading cause of death is already heart and vascular issues in the country. As we know here in America, the fatter one’s country gets, the higher the health care bills. The Turkish government has realized this and has started several programs to battle this recent development. Some of these include paying for weight loss surgery, an anti-smoking campaign and some think it might follow Dubai’s footsteps by offering a gram of gold–about 42 dollars–for every kilo (2.2 lbs) lost. GIMDES, an agency to certify halal, exclaims that the West gifted fatness to Turkey.  GIMDES actually puts this on their website.
