The Algerian national football team just donated their entire World Cup prize money to the people of Gaza. Apparently Islam Slimani, the Algerian striker, says that the team is donating the $9 million in prize money that they received as losers in the round of 16. Slimani plays for Sporting Lisbon, but this donation is actually a large sacrifice for the players of Algeria. The donation means that the squad who are based out of more modest clubs than Sporting Lisbon like ones in Algeria and Tunisia and the lower French leagues are giving up money they needed. The team reception in Algiers was nothing short of a hero’s welcome home, but when Slimani got up to speak, he simply said, “They need it more than us.” Read more about how this brings politics into football and what the world is saying at The Independent.
