The Instagram feed “Everyday Middle East” (@everydaymiddleeast) is an account with a collection of images taken on cell phones, contributed by 23 photographers based in the Middle East and North Africa. Lindsay Mackenzie, the founder and curator of the feed, explains that the motivation behind the project is to challenge visual stereotypes of the Middle East that prevail in much of the mainstream media. Day-to-day life is fascinating across the region, but mainstream media publishes photos of the extreme only. The point is to break the stereotypes that riddle how people think about the Middle East. The fact is that as crackdowns on journalists in some countries becomes more prevalent in the region, mobile phone use to tell stories has become necessary. Here are some images captured by photojournalists across the region. Make sure to read the interesting interview at Panorama because there are also more pictures as well.
