Pope Francis keeps coming at us with an uncharacteristically open mind. He further demonstrated his commitment to this by praying in Istanbul’s historic Blue Mosque. He also visited the Hagia Sophia. Pope Francis even removed his shoes before he entered the Sultan Ahmet Mosque which is also known as the Blue Mosque because of its blue tiles. The Pope also faced the direction of Mecca and bowed his head in prayer when stood next to Istanbul’s Grand Mufti, Rahmi Yaran.
He has been concerned about Christians in Turkey and made a reference to the fact that he believes all religions must enjoy the same rights. In Turkey, Christian communities complain that it is hard for them to get permits to rebuild or refurbish buildings. With the country’s population being 99% Muslim, it is hard to get the government to follow through on promises to return confiscated property.
